By John H. Foote
No Spike Lee or Da Five Bloods, no Tom Hanks or News of the World, no Best Picture for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. The big news of the nominations for me are who and what was NOT nominated.

And Netflix, expected to dominate the Best Picture race ended up with just two films in the running for Best Picture. You see, we have all been writing about the Oscar possibilities for months and truly no one knows anything. We might think we do, but until the nominations are announced, we know nothing.
Leading the pack was the Netflix produced Mank with a whopping 10 nominations including Best Picture, Best Actor (Gary Oldman), Best Director (David Fincher) and Best Supporting Actress (Amanda Seyfried). Shockingly the film did not receive a Best Screenplay nomination for Jack Fincher, David’s father, which was highly expected.
Six films received six nominations each, all Best Picture nominees: Nomadland, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Minari, Sound of Metal, The Father and Judas and the Black Messiah. Promising Young Woman received five.
For the first time in Academy history two women have been nominated for Best Director in the same year: Chloe Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman.
The late Chadwick Boseman, who passed away last fall of cancer was nominated for Best Actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.
Nine actors and actresses of color received nominations, making clear diversity is sweeping through the Academy Awards, but sentiment is alive and well, with Glenn Close nominated for Supporting Actress in the critically slammed Hillbilly Elegy.
Sacha Baron Cohen had a big morning with nods for Best Supporting Actor in The Trail of the Chicago 7 and a Screenplay nomination for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.
Here are the nominations, leaving out the Shorts and Docs.
More criticism of the nominees to come once I have fully analyzed them. Lots of omissions.

John H. Foote is a well-recognized Canadian film critic/historian who has been an active critic for 30 years. His deep love for the movies began at a very young age. He began his career as co-host of the popular TV show Reel to Real where he remained for nine years. While on TV he began dabbling in education, eventually ascending to Director of the Toronto Film School, where he also taught film history. After leaving the college to care for his wife, he returned to teaching at Humber College where he taught both Film History and Method Acting Theory. John has written two books: “Clint Eastwood – Evolution of a Filmmaker” and the upcoming “Spielberg – American Film Visionary”. He is currently working on two books, one about the films of the seventies and another on the films of Martin Scorsese. Through his career he has worked in TV, radio, print and the web. John has interviewed everyone in the industry (more than 300 interviews) except Jack Nicholson, he says sadly. Highlights include Martin Scorsese, Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep Robert Duvall, Jane Fonda, Francis Ford Coppola and Kathryn Bigelow.
