John H. Foote…has been an active film critic and historian for thirty years, and is recognized as one of Canada’s most insightful film critics.
He began his career on television, co-hosting and co-producing the popular movie talk show Reel to Real from 1992 through 1999. He left the show for print criticism, writing for Life and Fashion Magazine, while still doing appearances on CBC Newsworld. When the internet exploded, he began writing for various top sites including
incontention.com,
thewrap.com,
awardscircuit.com and most recently
thecinemaholic.com. He has been quoted in the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the New York Post, Toronto Star and the Toronto Globe and Mail.
His work as a film critic has allowed him to interview the best and biggest stars and directors in the business, “everyone but Nicholson” he smiles.
Foote also became deeply involved in film education, first as an instructor at the Treasure Institute in Toronto, later moving to the Toronto Film School, where in addition to teaching he became the Dean of the college.
Finally, he is also an author, his first book Clint Eastwood: Evolution of a Filmmaker was published in 2010. He has since wrote a massive study of the films of Steven Spielberg, seeking publication, and is working on two books currently. Cinema Renaissance will deal with the evolving new American cinema since 1967, written with Nick Maylor and The Seventies Cinema will explore the films of that decade for better and worse.

John H. Foote is a well-recognized Canadian film critic/historian who has been an active critic for 30 years. His deep love for the movies began at a very young age. He began his career as co-host of the popular TV show Reel to Real where he remained for nine years. While on TV he began dabbling in education, eventually ascending to Director of the Toronto Film School, where he also taught film history. After leaving the college to care for his wife, he returned to teaching at Humber College where he taught both Film History and Method Acting Theory. John has written two books: “Clint Eastwood – Evolution of a Filmmaker” and the upcoming “Spielberg – American Film Visionary”. He is currently working on two books, one about the films of the seventies and another on the films of Martin Scorsese. Through his career he has worked in TV, radio, print and the web. John has interviewed everyone in the industry (more than 300 interviews) except Jack Nicholson, he says sadly. Highlights include Martin Scorsese, Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep Robert Duvall, Jane Fonda, Francis Ford Coppola and Kathryn Bigelow.
