The night held no shortage of surprises this evening at the 25th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards. Rami Malek bested the impressive competition to win the lead actor award. Malek’s portrayal of Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody could land the actor an Oscar, despite the film’s director Bryan Singer once again being accused of sexual assault on minors.
Black Panther took home the SAG’s version of a “best picture” award when the film won Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Motion Picture. The film has an impressive cast, no doubt, but it defeated some impressive rosters tonight. Could the Marvel film take home best picture? It is entirely possible.
Glenn Close took home Best Performance By a Female Actor in a Leading role in The Wife, all but solidifying her position as the odds-on favourite to win the Oscar for Best Actress. Mahershala Ali did likewise for Best Supporting Actor with his win tonight for his role in Green Book.
Emily Blunt (who was also nominated against Glenn Close) took home the award for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting role for A Quiet Place, directed by her husband John Krasinski. Blunt’s win doesn’t do much to affect the Oscars as she has not been nominated by the Academy this year.
